synopsis

1935. Would Don Juan, the seducer from Sevilla, be proud of this descendent Guillaume Ga?tan Donatien de Burlador? Guillaume himself is not proud at all. He's even considering suicide. But Hell doesn't want him. So they suggest for him to go elsewhere. To a tropic island where he can replace that girl private teacher... The legend of Don Juan is pulled to pieces in this confusing, biting, jubilant comedy in the Caribbean. Pierre Arditi presents himself ridiculously in his long-johns in a painting of Le Douanier Rousseau. ?Excellently shot, tainted with Creole dullness, brilliant dialogues and interpretation, staged with just the right touch. 'Plaisir d'amour' is a feast for the eyes, crafted in a female language reflecting the myth of Don Juan in detail and causing great joy and laughter.? (Jacques Siciler, ?Le Monde?, 12.04.91)

synopsis

Marie, object of desire but also a scapegoat, is a pretty girl living with her mother in impoverished circumstances in an isolated cabin. She rejects the men of the village. Her only friend is the owner of a travelling cinema. The film ?La Comtesse aux pieds nus de Mankiewicz? helps her to free herself. It teaches her that the universe is not limited to the deserted corner in the countryside but that there is another world out there. When her mother dies, killed by a road hog, Marie contacts the persons of rank who refuse to give her money for the burial. The ?honest people? kill her favourite animal. From that day onwards, Marie plots her revenge... As ?the pirate's fianc?e? (in allusion to Brecht), a free and amoral maniac, she settles her accounts with the cowardly, poor, prude world in an inhuman way. Vandalist. ?This joy of massacre, that could also have been an indecent farce, is ? quite on the contrary ? a revolt, including healthy morals where the cinema stimulates consciousness. A jubilant comedy on the brink of surrealism.? (C. Bouniq-Mercier, ?Guide des Films?). Award-winner at the Venice Festival in 1969.

synopsis

Doesn't trendy Cookie- V?nus de Palma by her real name - daughter of a millionaire and an intelligent brat deserve more that just being kidnapped? All she needed were two absolute beginners. Her shrewdness and her underhandedness are so much more worthy than all of her father's money. The rebel filmmaker succeeds in creating an extremely grotesque comedy based on the scheming crime classic ?Bande de rapt?s? by Jean Laborde. A parody on the black-comedy series of fighting against ignorance, hypocrisy and the domination by men. An extravagant version of the feminist revolt. ?Luckily, it's Nelly Kaplan making a film that is not like others. In this film, we experience, above all, a new flaire ? not grotesque or parodistic, not farcical either. It's the Nelly Kaplan flaire.? (?Le Canard Encha?n??, 01.12.71)

synopsis

In Coppet live Madame de Stael and Benjamin Constant. In Coppet lives Sybille, a rebellious teenager protesting against her very bourgeois, too Suisse, too moralising father. In order to free herself from the social constraints within her family the young lady writes a bold novel. ?N?a? is just like the erotic books she stole from a bookinist she's friends with, books she devours at night... Emmanuelle Arsan, whose novel was the basis for this film, is popular rather for her ?Emmanuelle?. Obviously, Nelly Kaplan has largely revised this voluptuous nine days' wonder: a love story, a woman's look on the men's world, a feminist and liberal film through and through. ?Kaplan's got something acrobatic about her. She knows how to heal with humour, her film is relaxing. The gestures and looks in this film last just long enough to count. The exact opposite of such aggressive and brutal cinema that exhausts and wears out the spectators.

synopsis

In that one corner of the Saint-Ouen fleamarket, there is a junk dealer. His name is Charles. In that one building, there is a caretaker, a cleaning lady rather. Her name is Lucie. Charles and Lucie often fight: they are husband and wife, what else? But the notary's assistant comes in handy: thanks to an unexpected heritage, Charles and Lucie can start afresh... In the older couple's steeplechase, Nelly Kaplan pursues the treacherous appearance of the heritage and the illusion of a new life, a perfect set-up for irony and surrealistic gags. Like the murderer in the confessional box or the fortune teller Nostradama played by Belen (Kelly Kaplan herself). ?Due to the brilliant and subtle performance of Ginette Garcin?and to Daniel Ceccaldi, funny and moving, this guilt-redeeming film against the movement of trends and likings, underlines its authors personal development. You will be enthralled.? (Henry-Jean Servat, ?Midi Libre?, 12.09.79)

synopsis

Documentation on the genesis and the shooting of the famous ?Napol?on? of 1927 with Albert Dieudonn?, the assistant and close relative of Abel Gance. Nelly Kaplan discusses the creation of a mythical film and shows unpublished material: film sequences during the shooting of the film, photos of the work, sound recordings, Gance's logbook. ?Nelly Kaplan doesn't like legends, pious or not. But she likes life, the human truth. Gance and his work, Gance and his genious, entirely free from immortal wreaths.? (Jacques Siciier, ?Le Monde?, Mai 84)
