A documentary about a group of homeless people who live in a camp in New York's Lower East Side: marginalized men and women who, to survive in the heart of this great metropolis, have organized a welcome center in Culture Plaza, the Rainbow Soup Kitchen, where every guest can receive a hot meal and shelter from the cold. When the city threatens to close the center to tear down the whole neighborhood, the homeless come together and start their battle with the city.
directors statement
"1 don't like to put music in documentary films. With music, you cover up and falsify emotions, and you manipulate the space and create artificial movement. In Rock Soup I inserted music because I wanted a further element to create emotions and sensations; I thought about calling Chico Freeman and having him tape a live session in Central Park. I...] In the film, the music stays to the side of the story and acts as a go-between in the relationships between the characters. We taped the music live to make its urgency and necessity still more evident, and to make the tie between the life of the homeless and the jazz sound of a live jam session."
